Diet Basics
There are multiple pathways to a healthier diet. While all diets rely on different principles, most have some basic similarities. These similarities are the foundation for a healthier lifestyle. Also remember that all diets work better when combined with consistent exercise.
Most diet basics have to do with what you eat as well as how often and when you eat. Some diets have you eat greater quantities of certain foods while staying away from others. Regardless of what these foods are, most agree that they should be natural. This often means lean meats, whole grains, vegetables and fruits. As a rule of thumb, foods that come packaged or in a wrapper are usually heavily processed. This means that a lot of artificial substances have been added for taste and to extend its shelf life.
Natural foods should always be consumed as often as possible. This rule is universal regardless of which diet you follow. People who follow a vegetarian diet for example, may believe that as long as they avoid meat, they can eat whatever they want. This notion is completely wrong and can lead to unexpected weight gain and other health problems.
Most nutrition experts also agree that meals should be broken down to smaller portions. Most people are accustomed to eating three times a day. This means each meal would have to be large enough to keep you satisfied until your next meal. A healthier option is to eat more often, with each meal being of smaller portion. The idea is to eat about every three hours. This would total to five or six meals. Eating in such a manner has been shown to speed up metabolism, which results in more calories being burned.
As long as you adhere to these diet basics, the specific diet you follow is secondary.
